As part of the on-going cooperation between Australia National University (ANU) and An Giang University (AGU), from 15 to 19 September 2017 the Research Center for Rural Development (RCRD) – AGU was honoured to welcome representatives from ANU in order to develop the framework for the 2018 Vietnam Field School for students from ANU.

Participants from ANU, including Dr. Ashley Carruthers (Faculty of Archeology and Anthropology) and Ms. Edwina Fingleton-Smith (Faculty of Environment and Sociology of Fenner University), worked with the Director and board of RCRD.

A field trip by staff of the Research Center for Rural Development (RCRD) took place on 10 – 12 April, 2017, in order to visit an organic rice field cultivation model and assess the effect of the rices’ quality on consumers’ health. Local authority staff accompanied RCRD’s staff to visit the research field and rice varieties and the selection model of a “farmer scientist” – Mr Hoa Si Hien. His passion is to produce a diversity of rice varieties, capable of high yields and climate change adaptation.

In July 2017, SEARCA/SFRT program has agreed to offer RCRD a small grant to organize an international forum on climate change and agro-ecology in the Mekong Region. In particular, 10 SEARCA/SFRT grantees from Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Lao and Myanmar will be funded for travel to RCRD/AGU to participate in the forum. This forum will be linked with AliSEA research grant was funded to RCRD in early this year.
