Introduction

My name is Joep Hagenvoort and I am studying the Master International Land- and Water Management at the Wageningen University. My host in Vietnam is the National University of Ho Chi Minh City and the Center of Water Management and Climate Change (WACC). For my MSc thesis I am currently working at An Giang University on the subject of controlled flooding in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD).

Research objectives

High dike systems are built in the upper part of the VMD to enable the production of a third rice crop and it provides diversification of permanent land-use types (Netherlands-Vietnam Mekong Delta Plan, 2013; Howie, 2011; Cong Huu, 2011). The land inside the high dike system is no longer in use as flood retention area resulting in hydraulic effects on the water levels in the Mekong River, increased vulnerability to floods in the middle/coastal part of the VMD, prevention of alluvium/organic matter on the field, land subsidence and pollution (Netherlands-Vietnam Mekong Delta Plan, 2013; Howie, 2011; Personal communication Nguyen Van Kien). Farmers that grow rice inside the high dike system encounter declining yields by more than 40% compared to August dikes (Howie, 2011). The proposed research provides a comprehensive background that investigates the farmers’ vision, analyses cost-benefits within two dike systems (August dike vs. high dike system) and the strategy of the State concerning the implementation of the high dike systems.

Biography

From 2009 – 2013 I studied Land- and Water Management at the Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences and specialised in Integrated Water Management. The first three years I focussed on Dutch Water Management and in the last year I did my BSc thesis at the Can Tho University on salt water intrusion in the coastal area of Vinh Chau. Currently (2013 – 2015) I am studying International Land- and Water Management at Wageningen University with the specialisation of Irrigation and Water Management. I decided to specialise myself in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta and from September till February I work at An Giang University for my MSC thesis. Furthermore I will do an Internship at Tra Vinh University on the monitoring of saline intrusion from March till July 2015.
