Session: Reconciling world views on the human-earth relationship
Humans have always concerned themselves with the human-earth system relationship, often expressed through customs and beliefs, such as religion. Not infrequently, when science challenges the prevailing perception of the human-earth system relationship, it has repercussions in society at large (e.g. Galileo, Darwin, climate change). But the relationship is far more complex than a simple dichotomy.

The recent recognition that human activities influence the Earth system as a whole demands a form of human “stewardship” of the planet. This session explores issues around socio-culturally driven behaviour and perceptions. Can the various perceptions of the relationship between humans and the Earth system be reconciled or transformed to support earth stewardship? How have these perceptions been studied and documented? What examples exist of perceptions being considered in policies or projects?
